And the nightmares begin:
News release from California controller; we were told yesterday that as U employees, we're subject to the conditions on page 2. This means that if the California legislature doesn't pass our budget, I'll be paid minimum wage starting soon.
No kidding, kids, this is a disaster. I am a single income homeowner. One month of federal minimum wage ($5.25 as opposed to CA's $6.75) would be enough to knock me on my ass. And somehow I doubt Bank of America would be understanding. Even worse, because I have access to internal information about collective bargaining, I'm not permitted to belong to a union, so I'm not under contract. We're at-will employees. They can let us go for no reason.
All of my 'professional' jobs have been with educational institutions, and I'm proud of that. I can't imagine working again for a profit-based organization. But right now, it sounds awfully good. Please excuse me while I go investigate the 403(b) loan program and have a large freakout. 2003-07-02 - 7:45 a.m.
A friend is having surgery today to remove a softball-sized ovarian cyst. She's all of 27. Good luck and much love, honey. We're pulling for you. ********
A few years ago, Momma Guerin and her then-partner Steve* initiated a weekly gathering of friends every Tuesday night. We'd bring something to munch, maybe a sixpack, and catch up. It was easier than trying to get everyone together during weekends. It also provided a great opportunity to bring in new people. The tradition fell off when Momma moved to Belize, because nobody else was willing to host each week. With the birth of Siana (aka Baby Guerin [and yes, this is the real spelling]), Tuesday nights have been reborn. Last night was hosted by the Engaged Couple**, and damn, was it beautiful. There are pics to upload of babies Bella and Siana, plus the doggie goodness of Happy and Jade. It was like going to a family reunion where everybody likes each other. Much love, y'all. *We currently have four Steves. I think I need to put up a cast page. I've used pseuds up 'till now out of respect, but it's getting hard to keep track. **Just for fun I'm putting together a sort of family tree of our group. Finally, a real purpose for Visio!
