The first watchcap's finished.

Simple projects are so rewarding. This color's not reading right; the red is rich and deep - not fuschia at all. Thanks to Staceyjoy for the original pattern; I adjusted it slightly, including blanket stitching the turned cuff. I've decided to do these for all the guys this Christmas, and since they're mostly Scotsmen, I'll look up their tartans and go with those colors. I love my geeky Scottish friends.

Damn, I had forgotten how boring the NFL can be. After so many months of basketball and baseball, football is stultifying. NFL games make a doubleheader look short. We're well into the second quarter of the Eagles/Bucs game, and I've already fallen asleep twice. 'Course, that could be because the couch has a permanent butt-print that's lulling. I'm only still watching because of a weird fascination with John Gruden. He's like a car wreck.

As I mentioned last time, it was revealed today that my sup will retire the middle of March. She is also having carpal tunnel surgery in November, with the second hand scheduled for December. This means she's going to be around for the next six weeks, then will be in only periodically. Yowza. I've talked with the upper management several times about taking over, but we'd all assumed it wouldn't be for a few years. If all the promises I've heard are honored, I'll move into a new title series and will earn somewhere near $10K a year more. Talk about exciting. Talk about nervewracking. I only hope I'm capable of doing everything they want done. Wish me luck.

There are people coming over for dinner this weekend, so I'm planning a tapas menu. Two of my eaters are pesco-vegetarians, so it's seafood only. What do you think?

Roasted red peppers in garlic and olive oil
Grilled marinated octopus (yes, they're adventurous)
Roasted artichokes with smoky aioli
Seared tuna with sweet tomato dipping sauce
Tortilla (potato cake) with caramelized onions
Chickpeas with oregano, olive oil and sherry vinegar
Manchego cheese with membrillo (quince paste)
Plum-almond cake with apricot glaze
Sangria and Rioja

The best part of this menu is that I can do all of it ahead of time. That's perfect, since the dinner's Friday. I think it'll be yummy.
